The Almost Gate Swings Between Brain and Mind
Tracing how neural thresholds shape meaning, decision-making, and cognitive architecture.
We may never untangle whether mind arises from brain, or merely dances alongside it. But the Almost Gate doesn’t demand resolution—it operates at the cognitive threshold where near-matches become matches. This post explores how neural thresholds shape meaning, decision-making, and the architecture of our internal worldview, sidestepping philosophy not to dismiss it, but to move forward with what cognition requires.
At the movie theater, I watched Indiana Jones run out of the cave with a boulder threatening his death at any moment, though I know that’s 24 still images one-after-another which my mind sees as movement, not stills. That proves that the mind is distinct from the brain. Yet, injuries to the brain result in a loss of mental capacities. That proves the brain includes the mind.
How can the two opposing conclusions be reconciled?
Almost Gate doesn’t try. That’s outside its focus. This Substack uses both terms to describe the development of our mental architecture—like the physicist who sometimes calls light a wave and other times a particle. Of course, it’s essential to be clear which interpretation is being used when Almost Gate addresses different aspects of neural properties that structure our thoughts.
When the Machinery Recedes: Mind at Work
The brain is the machinery—neurons firing, circuits routing, the substrate of cognition. It’s the here-and-now organ, the thing we can scan, stimulate, and dissect.
The mind is what the brain knows, what it remembers, what it connects together. It’s shaped by experience, layered with meaning, haunted by memory. It’s not just what the brain does, but what it has done, and what it makes of it.
The diagram above maps the trip from objective reality to internal worldview—showing how raw sensory data, shaped by memories and personal needs, is reorganized through learned theories. Almost Gates don’t concern themselves with where the input originated. What they evaluate is the aggregate activation—formed by the current sensory input already abstracted by earlier gates, plus the contextual influx from experience-linked neurons reactivated during that pathway’s revisit. If the combined signal surpasses the neural threshold, the gate ‘opens,’ converting ephemeral data into cognitive categories. That’s where meaning begins.
You may rightfully ask. So what? Well, it’s the internal worldview, not the external reality, that the mind uses for decision-making.
The visual below outlines how the subjective internal worldview—formed by abstraction and memory—shapes decisions. Logical deduction demands input—full, detailed, and timely. But when data is unknown, scarce or time is tight, associative substitution steps in. Crucial to decision-making is the time available before a decision must be made. If an immediate response is demanded, associations always have a ready response, while if time is available, a multitude of logical alternatives can be investigated.
The internal worldview is subjective, which explains how two people can come to different conclusions on the same apparent situation—and yet both can be sensible.
Born Without Morals, Built With Wiring
Consider a centuries-old debate: are we born with a brain that’s a blank slate or is it stocked with transcendental ideals?
Almost Gate Substack takes the position that the newborn begins with a very limited set of physical behaviors that grows broader with time. Transcendental ideals—those built-in mental orientations—are also limited. We may detect direction, edges, and motion, but not moral structures.
However, although the brain and the mind both arrive with very primitive cognitive structures, the genetic inheritance of Homo sapiens includes the delivery of neuroactive transmitters at phased intervals to facilitate learning. The learning starts with personal awareness, moves to bodily movement and then to language acquisition, social bonding, and into thinking skills lasting into our twenties.
The architecture of our thinking forms from the combination of our genetics and our experiences—with the neural threshold and its personal distinctive value playing a pivotal role in the Almost Gate’s abstraction of experience into categories, the substance of our cognitive architecture.
The newborn mind isn’t a vault of wisdom—it’s a hallway of sensory wiring awaiting experience.
Out of Scope, But Not Out of Mind
Ignoring the mind-brain problem in Almost Gate doesn’t mean I find it uninteresting. The Open Encyclopedia of Cognitive Science offers a good introduction and valuable references that I like to visit.
I am left wondering: where is free will? Is it in the gap between mechanistic brain operations and the view of reality that the mind works on?
Here’s a little diagram that highlights my concern about scientific reductionism. On the way down the staircase living, the transition to nonliving appears but is unexplained. On the deterministic way up, there is no place where free will appears.
Since science can’t detect vitality vanishing on the way down, perhaps it misses autonomy on the way back up?
Perhaps you find free will in quantum indeterminism or as a gift from a creator beyond one’s comprehension. Or perhaps from another perspective that I’ve not mentioned.

Almost Gate doesn’t claim to answer where thought begins or who owns the spark of agency. But its operations remind us that cognition is more than machinery—it’s memory, pattern, and threshold. As for free will, perhaps it lives just outside the gate’s scope. Not ruled out. Just not yet mapped. The diagrams hold the architecture, but we move through them with questions still flickering.
